Australia shares rise 1.2 pct; Westfield gains

Australia shares rose 1.2 percent on Thursday, as strongcorporate earnings and retail sales data in the United States propelled companies with large offshore earnings such as shopping mall owner Westfield Group (ASX:WDC.ax) .
The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index .AXJO was 57.8 points to 4,888.9 by 2313 GMT, its best level since late September 2008.
Westfield, which has about half of its retail outlets in the United States, gained 1.8 percent to A$13.37. (Reporting by Denny Thomas;)
