Screening for hepatitis C will be made available to 30 patients from the Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH).
A hospital employee has tested positive, prompting the concern.
The health care worker told the hospital of the result, prompting health authorities to order the checks.
SA Health says hepatitis C can only be spread by blood-to-blood contact.
Chief medical officer Paddy Phillips says the risk of the patients getting hepatitis C is extremely low.
"There's one estimate that was published in the Medical Journal of Australia that reported roughly one in 2,000 to one in 16,000 risk and it depends on the particular type of patient contact," he said.
